Lack of Transparency on Internet Piracy Proposals Chided

March 4, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ Privacy advocates are raising eyebrows at the lack of transparency regarding the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) being crafted by 39 countries to combat Internet piracy.

Representatives from the US, EU and Asia have been negotiating the agreement for two years and are expected to have a conclusion to the negotiations by the end of 2010, but most of the information publicly known about ACTA has come from information leaks.

The European Data Protection Supervisor Peter Hustinx said he was concerned that so little information about the agreement is publicly available. Although not much is known about the agreement-in-progress, the German justice minister taking part in the talks told Der Spiegel, "The German government will not accept any international treaty that includes blocking Internet access."

Der Spiegel also reports that the latest leaked draft of the agreement puts the onus on Internet service providers to block offenders whom they know are illegally exchanging copyrighted data - presumably meaning the ISPs will be legally forced to spy on its subscribers.
