Azerbaijan Remains the Main Gas Supplier - Narmania

Gas imports from Russia are at a ten-year high. In 2024, Georgia further increased gas purchases from Russia while reducing from Azerbaijan. According to last year's statistics, Azerbaijan's share in total imports decreased to 75%, while Russia's increased to 25%.

The chairman of GNERC Davit Narmania says that the annual increase in gas consumption in the country also contributes to the growth of imports from Russia. He notes that Azerbaijan remains the main natural gas supplier for Georgia.

"Natural gas reception from Azerbaijan is carried out based on throughput capacity and other technical parameters. Subsequently, two major consumption points are on site - these are the Gardabani thermal power plants and the Rustavi node. After this, the gas system needs to be filled to then supply Western Georgia with pressure, which is why Russian natural gas is technically mixed through the Saguramo node. These are the main factors. Azerbaijan remains the main supplier," - says Narmania.

In 2024, natural gas consumption was almost entirely dependent on imports. The country purchased a total of 3.1 billion m³ of gas worth 400 million USD, of which 2.3 billion m³ came from Azerbaijan and 788 million m³ from Russia. Statistics show that over the last five years, gas imports from Russia increased from 204 million m³ to 788 million m³. The country pays 185 million USD for 1000 m³ of Russian gas.
