'It's been hard' | North Idaho nurse loses home in house fire

Trina Wallace had lived in the home for more than 30 years. Now, she's asking her community for help.

RATHDRUM, Idaho — The sour smell of burnt wood and plastic wafts over Trina Wallace's land in Rathdrum, after an electrical fire destroyed her mobile home early Monday morning. Nobody was hurt in the fire, but she wasn't able to salvage anything but a few cast iron pans from the rubble.

"Everything else just melted," Wallace said. "I don't think it's really sunk in yet."

Wallace had lived in the home for more than 30 years. She spent Thursday disposing of truckloads of burnt debris from what she said was and electrical fire sparked from her freezer's outlet.

Now, she is staying in a small camper on her property. While it is a roof over her head, Wallace says she's overwhelmed with how much she needs to replace.

"I went to the grocery store and that was hard. Every aisle I walked down, I could see stuff that I [used to have] plenty of," she said.

A GoFundMe page is set up to help raise money. She says donations would help her get back on her feet, especially since her home wasn't insured. Since it was an old mobile home, Wallace said insurance would have cost $2,000 dollars a month – a cost too much for her to afford.

Her goal now is the same as it was before: build a new home on her property with a better view of the mountain.
